EXPERIMENT
CENTRIFUGAL
PUMP
1. INTRODUCTION
Centrifugal pump is an
equipment or a device which convert kinetic energy to pressure energy by
rotating its impeller. Centrifugal pump are mostly used to move liquids through
a piping systems. Therefore it is called Rotadynamic pump. The centrifugal pump
are best suited for moderate flowrates or higher flowrates of the fluids. Due
of its low cost, low maintenance and flexibility of application it’s is widely
used in the process industries. Centrifugal pump consists of an impeller
rotating within a casing. Fluid enter the pump near the centre where impeller
is rotating and due to centrifugal action, fluids is thrown outward. From
centre of the impeller to the tips of the impeller vanes the kinetic energy of
the fluids is increases. Kinetic energy is also known as velocity energy. As
the fluids leave the impeller and enter the diffusor. The impeller is the heart
of the centrifugal pump. It’s consists of a number of curved vanes or blades
shaped in such a way as to give smooth fluids flow between the blades.
2. OBJECTIVE
Study of Centrifugal pump
characteristics- Determining the relationship between head, discharge, speed,
power and efficiency for a centrifugal pump at various speeds, determining
head/flow rate characteristics of two similar pumps operating in either
parallel or series configuration at the same speed.
3. PROCEDURE
i.
Closed all the forced ball valve, drainage
valve, suction valve and delivery valve.
ii. Fill the water in the sump tank. Switch on the
main power. Check centrifugal pump is working properly.
iii.
First fully open the delivery valve and
suction valve. In this apparatus, the suction pressure meter is not working
properly so we take suction pressure is equal to zero. Using the rotating
handle for speed which in the control panel adjust the speed of the pump
impeller.
iv. Now there is no delivery pressure is seen
in the delivery meter. Adjust the delivery valve, note down the delivery
pressure.
v.
Water will fall down in the sump tank
through the delivery channel. Using the direction handle, change the flow
direction, now the water will collect in the measuring tank. For 15 sec,
collect the water in the measuring tank.
vi.
After 15 sec, measure the fluid (water)
height that is collect in the measuring tank. Then calculate the flow rate.
vii. Similarly at different speed of the
impeller by adjusting the rotating handle for speed and adjust the delivery
valve calculate the flow rate. After finish the experiment, close all the
switch and drainage out the fluid (water) by opening the drainage valve.
